Girls How do you like to dance? Independent Freestyle or Partner Dancing?

Girls in general like to dance. So whats your preference? Up there freestyling away or in a group of girls freestyling? Would you like to partner dance with a man? If a man asks you to dance how would you react? Would you let a man lead you or would you try to lead him?

I like Modern Jive because I can dance it with any girl even if she has never partnered danced at all. Whereas with Salsa and other Latin dancing she has to know what she is doing as it is in the feet while Modern Jive is in the hands

Its quite rewarding when you and a girl can move well together but doesn't happen much.

Guys your thoughts?

My honest opinion is that people nowadays don't know how to dance.

You cannot compare shaking your body uncontrollably with something like the Waltz. Furthermore, the horrendous noise that people call music is certainly not music but a deafening cacophony of sounds. Why is it necessary to make those noises so loud?

I don't know how to dance because it is difficult to find any place in today's society that dances the real dances and not just uncontrolled body shaking. It is a pity that the nice things of the past have evolved to such disgrace.

I would have loved to be able to dance the waltz but alas, there is no youngster anymore that even knows what that dance is.

Yes the Waltz is quite incredible - you do literally float around the floor. No other dance is anything like it. But sadly impossible now because unless every body on the dance floor is doing it there is just not the room.

Partly the reason for my question, is with the Hispanic influence in the US, I thought partner might be more common than here in Australia but seems not. Here there are some venues - often pubs - and you pay $10 which gives you a group lesson and social dancing. But there still not that many places that do this.

I like both. It's amazing when you have a partner and it's like two pieces that fit together. Moving around as one, around and between the other couples, that's the beauty of it. I would let him lead.
What I like about dancing solo is the freestyle aspect of it. With partner dancing you are usually bound to a limited amount of dance moves and those steps are usually done in a specific order as well so that can limit options. Freestyle allows you to do whatever you want and express yourself.

Hi Ms_Facesitter, Moving around as one is a *nice* summation of partner dancing. It is particularly delightful when you and your partner have the same sense of kinesthetics. Everything is just so easy between you and it all flows.

I can see your point of limited options as you don't get to choose the moves with the guy leading.

The down side of solo to me is the dynamics are different. At a club if I were to ask you to dance, then we'd just be dancing solo at about the same spot on the floor. It also seems highly intrusive to ask you. Or am I, like Elon Musk, just too shy?

That is true we would be just feeling the music together, expressing ourselves, perhaps bounce off of eachother. Is there partner dancing for club music?

Yes. Modern Jive just needs a 4 beat. There is not a particular music style like latin where there is a hold on 1 or some other beat. And it is easier because the footwork is not rigid as with latin and in fact was designed that way.
I was going to post a link but the computer says I am not allowed to. If you are interested enough to youtube, all competition level dancing gets a bit silly with painted on smiles. Dips are dangerous in a club environment too.

Never came across forro till now. Looks like fun I think. Any latin dance is in my view.

That's the dance that I would love to learn :) I don't know if it can be done on club music, but if it can, it'll be that all night every night.

Go for it! It does get addictive so it may well become all night every night. In a lot of latin dances there is a hold ie no step and it is a hip movement instead of a foot movement. In the music there is no beat on the hold. To me that was the hardest thing to get that right. I don't know if Forro has that and I think would be the only prob with club music. Almost all club music is 4/4 so I don't see why not dance it in a club. If there is a hold you could just do it anyway.

Lessons help. It is taught in Australia as Brazillian Dance Fusion so there must be places in the US. You want to find venues which have a latin night. It is Salsa night most often here. The the format is in the first third there is a beginners class which every body does. The next third is social dancing. The last third the class splits in two with beginners repeating the same lesson and the advanced learning a new routine. After that it is up to you to dance on as you want.

Either guys or girls rotate so everybody dances with everybody. So you don't need a partner and can go by yourself. If there is an imbalance then some girls or guys stand out for a song then are back in. A good aspect of this is you meet everyone and it is all the more social for it.

It used to cost me $10 a night and was much better & cheaper than studio lessons.

Any street latin is worth learning because the skills are transferable between the different types. Takes girls about 6 months and guys 12 months.

Hi Avicenna, I think so. The thing I like about partner dancing centric places is that you can ask any girl to dance and its only a dance so she won't say no. At a nightclub though to ask a girl to dance feels like you are asking her for sex on the spot. Gee, you can get adverse reactions from just from a friendly hello.

I can understand that. I had a fear of looking an awkward dork for many years so I avoided it at all costs.
Then at a birthday party, some girls insisted on dancing with me and I was hugely embarrassed I couldn't even pretend to dance. The next day I was walking along a shopping street and saw a sign 'Free Dance Lesson' and with the previous night embarrassment fresh in my mind I walked in.

Oddly I found I liked it.
