I get that being irritable, angry, and heightened emotions are normal but is turning completely hateful and vitriolic for a week out of every month normal or just an excuse to express pent up feelings?
Also I'm not in this situation, I'm asking for another reason.

What Girls Said
While such behavior is not typically a normal part of most women's cycles, there is a chance that he could be struggling with Premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) which is a more intense form of PMS and can cause greater changes in her attitude, hormones, and period symptoms in general. It might not be a bad idea for her to talk to her gyno about having such severe behavioral issues during her cycle. However, if she does talk to her gyno and it is discovered that there is nothing more than just pms going on, she may just be expressing her true feelings...
While yes I would definitely say that PMS is no excuse to be downright nasty, I also wonder what the receivers perception of this behavior is. Much like being pregnant we can experience such a high level of hormones and emotions during that time of the month, and some men just don’t know what to do with the mood swings and such. I once had a guy friend who thought I was completely mean during my time of the month, and being as unbiased as possible I just don’t think he knew how to handle how I was feeling, because it was a bit colder and not my usual bubbly self, but I’d never be horrible to someone. For him though, it came off that way.
Well, some of us females can get pretty mean around that time of the month. I was one of them in my teen years. usually when I got downright hateful there was other issues like stress, pressure from society and the pain from cramps and bloating.
