How do I know if this woman wants me to approach or not?

Hey all

There's a woman that I think is attractive on my college campus - I see her between classes. I have not struck up a conversation with her yet, but I really want to. I decided today I was going to do it. The opportunity came; we were walking towards each other on the way to class. As she got close I started to form a smile and I was hoping to meet her eye so I could have her attention and say something. Well as she got close she literally lowered her head and looked down. She walked past me looking this way. Of course I wasn't able to say anything as a result. I get the impression this is a no go? It's very discouraging and doesn't make things easy.

We don't have classes by the way, this is someone I see around.

Back in highschool I had a classmate, a girl, complain about how women always have to play damsels in distress when approaching and how she'd much rather go in and be all "I see you're slow with your calculus, let me explain this to you, you cute dimwit.". Right after that she went and pretended to need help working an excel formula.

Point being, you don't need all your eggs in one basket. Your hello doesn't need to be some great approach. Its literally fine asking anything, introducing yourself and leaving it at that. Then next time, with you two having shared names, you can go right for the hello's and will-you-be-at-the-party's. Don't complicate stuff.

Looking away from someone trying to make eye contact is definitely a no-go from my perspective. I often stare past people or look away when I don't want people to engage with me.

But also, she might just be shy etc, so feel free to say hi or something, just keep in mind that she might not way to engage. First sign that she wants to walk away or wants you to walk away, just take it. I once had a dude approach me after a class and start talking and I tried to disengage like half a dozen times but he straight up just about followed me back to my dorm. Was not fun. Do not follow a woman anywhere she isn't asking you to.
