How do you feel when you hear the success stories of your high school and college best friends?

I had this best friend from 14-20, she kind of tried to tease me or bully me from the beginning, she was from a rich neighborhood and was extremely smart, just mind-blowingly, and quite arrogant as well,

every-time she tried teasing me, I just couldn’t get angry, I found her very entertaining, I was looking forward to every day what other new thing she would come up with and I had fun ignoring her attempts and I noticed how annoyed she would get and enjoyed that a lot.

We had this intense relationship in the beginning, but later on we both realized we would rather be friends,

One day, she decided to leave that class where we were being tutored, we walked home together and she told me with teary eyes that she’s miss me a lot and that I was the only person who matched her in her eyes.

And I told her that I’d miss her too.

And since then we were inseparable. We went to a new teacher together and everything we did we did together, we never got tired exploring each other’s minds. At one point we even wanted to cut our hands together to share our blood to each other as a sign of friendship. We didn’t do that, but we were planning.

We still talk rarely but not so often, she’s in Europe now and she’s just doing crazy successful things, she’s rocking, she is so famous in her field, she’s doing wonders.

I am just so proud of her.

She just called me telling how we were going to “run away” to China when we were 21 and saying I ended up brave enough to do that and she followed a different path. I am happy for her and just can’t hide how proud I am.

And what makes me more proud is that she always told me I shaped her as a human he became and of course she shaped me in some way too. We both helped each other mold during the years of our friendship. Now we only meet each other once a year or twice a year, because either she’s abroad or I am.

In terms of ‘best friends’ out of the 4 of us, one of us is the most successful in terms of family and community (having being married with a house and a stable job and well-connected in his local community), I’m the most successful in out of our group in terms of career (advancing quickly, traveling the world, making the most money, having the most impressive resume), the other two are lagging behind a bit—but I truly do want them to be successful as well and reach their goals and dreams.


I’d be happy for their success and I want them all to thrive.


As for acquaintances, there are a some that are even more successful than me in their careers (e. g. one of them is a multimillionaire investor), but even for them, I’m glad things are working out well for them—and, seeing how well they are doing only inspires me to work hard to reach my own true potential.


When people close to me are successful, I feel happy for them.


When people in general are more successful than me, I feel inspired and motivated to continue working hard on my goals and dreams—so I too can live my best life—because I know that it’s in my grasp.

Fun Fact: I used to play ‘Started From the Bottom’ by Drake and imagine my friends and I all winning in life together, on a yacht or something, haha. Perhaps one day I can have a reunion like that with them. 🙂

I have friends that were more successful in some things, I am not jealous. They were more career oriented than me. I wanted to have a more balanced life and not be a workaholic. My wife stayed home with our kids instead of getting job and sticking them in daycare. WE did not want strangers raising our kids and I am pretty happy with my choice.

Yep. You’re happy with your choice and that’s all that matters. It means you made the right choice.

You're doing the right thing which is to just be happy for them. its all to easy to fall into that trap of compare and despair where you become envious of their success. but you shouldn't let that get to you. just be happy for them. they are on their journey you are on yours. your proud moments and achievements will come too.

Anyways thats just what i learned over the years. seems like you learned it sooner than i did.

I had to learn it, I was very successful myself till 22, all my best friends, are either successful prosecutors, successful attorneys, some work in European Council on quite high positions and some are CEOs of their own companies, they all ended up well.

I chose love at 22. I don’t regret it.

This girl, is very successful is medical field.

I knew she’s do something wonderful and I am happy she is.

As for me, I am not where I would like to be, but I am doing fine myself, and I know I can do a lot more, because I’ve already done a lot more.

So, it’s a matter of time, I don’t doubt my capabilities for a second.

Also, I hope you don’t compare yourself to anyone.

Whatever you do, you are you and nobody’s better than you.

Sometimes it’s big enough of an achievement to not have your heart stopped.

I am happy you are loving and forgiving to yourself and I hope you’ll never compare yourself to others, you are you and you are amazing in your own ways I am sure.

Aww how sweet. Thanks for your concern. But no worries im not like that anymore. I used to be. That was one of the biggest things that got me down was comparing myself to people and feeling awful about it. But I managed to learn to not do that. I settled on the faxt that all of us arr on our own separate paths through life. Yeah it might take some to get to the place they wanna be but eventually they will get there. Striving is the key here.

I would be happy for them. One of my college buddies is now quite successful, happily married with two sons, with a successful wife and a huge house. Even though he's very busy he still does charitable work and keeps up with old friends.

My childhood friend chose to go to medical field, because of my influence on her and knowing that she’s doing some wonders in her field and that I am the person who encouraged her to be that, feels amazing.

None of my college friends were as successful as I became. Most of them faded into obscurity making cliche bad life choices. We grew apart in my 30s.
