It isn't necessarily better than never knowing and wondering what if, given how many women confess they feel uncomfortable, and some feel grossed out when a man they aren't attracted to tells them.
That being said, I think it best to "crap or get off the pot," as my mother would say. If you're not going to tell her, for God's sake stop lurking around for years and years and begin searching for a woman for whom there is mutual attraction.
What does out of their league mean? Rich, super model, world traveling, athletic, social status, etc. Without all the info, i'd say she's either snobby, stuck up, high maintenance, or not worth the effort. When I see a lady who would be pretty if she didn't wear so much makeup and knew how to put down the smart phone once in a while, I usually move on to someone less plastic and more realistic.

we are in the year 2014. so i assume that you are aware how much of a narcissistic society we live in. the majority of dudes now a days dont have the confidence to get up and try again after failing so they rather not compete or go after they want out of life in order to avoid the same failure and humiliation all over again.

Yea, it's so much better to keep your mouth shut over some dumb crush then feed someones ego even bigger then it already is. Let some other poor sap who's more suited like a Preston 3rd, Blake or Hamilton deal with it.
many girls make fun of guys for asking them out, especially if the girl considers herself out of his league. It's a scary thing to do.
When they imagine going for someone, that they are stupidly trained to believe is "out of their league", the "she's out of my league, so it's terrible idea, and she will say no, maybe even laugh at me" mindset kicks in.
Really the only reason I would not make a move is if she has a boyfriend or if I am unsure if she is in a relationship.
Because they know they'll get rejected and what to save face
