Is it normal to try to make eye contact with someone in rearview mirror while you are driving?

I was in the backseat and this guy was driving. He was talking and whenever he said something he would make sure to look at me in rearview mirror. He had to lift his head slightly and bring his body forward a little in order to do it. He seemed intent on seeing if I was agreeing with whatever he was saying. Was he showing interest or is that normal behavior? I pay attention to road when I'm driving, regardless if guy I like is in backseat. So I was wondering if it meant anything or not since I've never had someone do that before.

He could be looking in the rear view mirror because he was driving. Or he is just trying to be polite and make eye contact with the person he was having a conversation with, which is what I would do.
