When a guy does a 180 degree personality change?

This guy and I had feelings for each other; it was like a "friends but everyone knows your more than friends" kind of thing. Never hooked up though.

He would be super affectionate, hug/ compliment me all the time and we'd hang out often. Now, he's been either acting really cold to me, avoiding me or outright ignoring me (ie he'll come up and say hi to my friend next to me then rush by me).

At the same time, I catch him staring at me. Once he was staring at me and smiling then liked away when he realized I caught him.

First of all, what the hell happened? We used to be super close; now he won't even approach me. Second, if he doesn't like me, why does he keep staring?

he could be unsure about his feelings, or maybe is shy go upfront and ask him it might be something bothering him personal (family. etc) nothing to do with you.
