Why do guys brag about how much they can drink?

It seems every guy I know brags about how many beers they can chug or talks about how they can drink anyone under the table. While I have come across girls like this, it definitely seems to be more of a guy thing. Is this part of the alpha male theory?

The reason why males tend to brag about how much they can drink is because they need to be "macho" in front of their male peers and they need to be "stupid" to look "cool." It could explain why an overwhelming majority of hospital admissions due to risk-taking are male, why almost all DUI/OVI accidents are male, why binge drinking is pretty much exclusively male and why men have more dependency issues in general.

I, for one, don't drink alcohol at all.
