What does it mean when a guy slaps/pats your thigh?

I was sitting next next to him at lunch with friends and sometimes he would slap or pat my thigh when something pertained to me. Today he did this about 5 times; he's also done it a few times last time I was in the car when I was sitting shotgun with him. It's not like a rude slap, but it was startling the first time because I was like "what". Yes, I do adore him. Is this flirtatious.. Or simply what does this mean and how should I respond?
