Why would a girl distance herself from a guy?

lets put up this scenario:

A girl and and guy are good friends, but (I think) the girl realizes that the guy likes her a lot and she starts to distance herself from him, not totally, but enough for the guy to know.

is it because she is isn't interested at all and wants to distance herself to try and make him 'uninterested' in her?

or is it because she's likes him back but is shy and distances herself from him just because?

I'm sorry for such a question but I seem to be the guy in this scenario, and I really don't know how to react to her distancing from me. and, as obvious as it is, it's really confusing for me because I can't stop thinking about her.

When I was younger. And if I found out a guy had a thing for me. I would automatically clam up and it would be awkward between the two of us. It could mean just about anything at this point. Either she's too shy to openly return these feelings. Or she isn't into you in that way.

As I've gotten a bit older, if I know someone likes me. I will make it known that the feelings are mutual. If someone admits to having feelings for me that I cannot return I will drop them subtle hints. And if it persists. Lower the boom, as gently as possible.

These reactions vary from person to person. The best course of action if you're really interested in her: is to confront her on this behavior. If you really like her, and she admits to being interested but also feeling nervous about your feelings. You just made a worthwhile risk. If we like someone enough. They'll always be worth the possible rejection. Even if it can hurt.

Thank you. I guess it is worth the risk. I've been very fond of her for over a year already and I think I should do something about it (I'm immensely shy when it comes to girls, although I'm a relatively confident guy). Thank you for your advice, I may meet her tonight, maybe I can tell her then.

she's not interested 100% and is uncomfortable knowing he likes her because she's afraid any further contact is going to make him think her feelings are reciprocated. it's because she doesn't know how else to handle the situation and is doing so immaturely. I've done it many times. it's not nice and not fair to the other person so I've tried to do it less and less.

Well she could like you to but if she does she would be giving you the power to hurt her too. She may not be ready to hand over that kind of control and rely on some body. She could have trust problems too. So if you like her like you say you do don't give up. Let her know she can trust you with her heart. But if she just doesn't like you move on there are other fish in the sea. That one just doesn't realize what a great catch you are and its their loss.

It might be that she is scared of being in a relationship. Not just with you, but in general.

Or she likes you too, but doesn't know if you like her and she distances herself so she doesn't get too attatched.

Ok, well not meaningly, but I have done that before with quite a few of my guy friends but i, sadly, did this because I was not intrested, however my guy friend found out I was going to ask him to turnabout but he knew one of his friend liked me so he distanced himself from me so I wouldn't ask him so his friend wouldn't be sad. That's always an option. If I was you I would still try to hang out with her but for now just dial it down a little but.
