What does it mean when a guy complains about his girlfriend?

This is a mutual friend. We get together once a while as a group and he always brings up his girlfriend and how annoying, unrealistic, controlling she is.
I hate to be mean and tell him that if that's the case he should leave her BUT I feel like saying something. At least asking him why is he talking about her?
There was time when I realized that maybe he's not lying about her. She called him when we all were out and we heard her yell at him for being out with us.
Anyways, do you guys think he's looking for an advice? Why is complaining about her when she's so bad? What's that all about?

One important thing: it's not about sex. He told another guy that he has to ask her to have sex with him because she won't initiate and when he does, she often says no.

This is exactly what I mean about getting to know each other a little more before committing ourselves to relationships. They say that you never really know what someone is really like until your living with them. That's true. People have their good qualities but they also have annoying habits or qualities. She happens to be the "control freak", its normally people with insecurities who are like this. Especially if her boyfriend has female friends, they might become a little jealous and suspicious of them. My best friends wife was the same whenever we spent time together. She wasn't on his case all the time but was very curious because I'm younger than her and more in shape. Its nothing to worry about, im sure if he couldn't cope with her he would leave her. Maybe he just enjoys complaining about her when the conversations run dry. Lol.

He may not realize that what he is doing is bad because he considers it as venting. Maybe he has self esteem issues and he thinks he can't do better, so all he does is complain? Some people do this with their job but they endure it for the money.

He might be complaining just because he likes to complain, or he might want advice from someone, who knows.
Either way, I think it's distasteful to complain about your SO behind their back to other people.
