Right... yeah it's positive! he's into you, or he wants you to know he notices you... HOWEVER: there is something that some people would have picked up on... and it can be any number of things, only you will know which (so don't let us tell you)
I'll make it multiple choice to help try to keep it simple. However, neither Life not Love are...
A) He intended that it be delivered as a complete compliment, in which to pronounce that he is attracted and/or has a crush on you. Not being particularly confident in himself; he subconsciously covered his compliment with a tonne of 'male' by adding the phrase "too bad". He thinks your more beautiful than whatever place you visited, which he didn't care about cause he just wants to see more of your face.
B) He finds you attractive or at least intriguing, he asked where you were, so he's interested in what your doing or just wants to start conversation in general. No one but he, knows the motive behind this but him. Text isn't very good for sarcasm and mannerisms in someone's voice. A male may well say it in a 'banterous' 'chirpy' 'enthusiastic' and 'suggestive' manner.
Be careful that the lack of total communication doesn't shadow both parties intentions.
C) There is a form of complimenting someone for your own immediate benefit. Such people have argued that there is no such thing as a selfless act; (listen to your subconscious and remember that "F. R. I. E. N. D. S" episode for reference)
Unfortunately even something as compliments can be manipulated to get what we want. If you feel he has complimented you to get your attention; but sub categorized you in his masoginistic mind as "Not bad" then he has 'fished' you a compliment, but set it on fire to say you should appreciate it.
This can show signs for a derogatory intention towards you, be careful he doesn't make you feel special while ultimately lowering your promise and confidence.
PERSONALLY: It sounds far too early to tell, keep chatting and see where it goes, maybe invite him along next time. I wouldn't read too much into it.
Good luck.
