Is he disinterested or just really, really shy?

There's this guy I've been crushing on. Well, I think he's cute. Anyways, he's probably the most shy, introverted person I've ever seen. We added each other on Facebook even though we've never had much of a convo in person. We have tons of interests and values in common. He's always the first person to "view" every story I post on Facebook. Though he only sometimes actually reacts to my posts. He recently started greeting me, saying only a nervous but animated "hi!!!" . Then i try to follow the conversation with a "how are you?" Or something to that effect but he just gets all awkward, clams up, and walks away. It's so weird!! But he stares at me from afar. I have tried to message him on social media and he replies with just one word. It's so odd and I can't read this guy for the life of me. Is he disinterested, or scared to talk to me?

If he's interested in you, he might just be shy and really nervous (you know how some women clam up, we can too). But you are making an effort to talk to him, usually a guy (even shy one like me) will start (or try) to open up more. So it is a bit weird. Is it possible to try to carry on the conversation more? Like after "how are you?", ask him something else, like maybe about one of his interests or something? Something that requires more of a detailed answer and see how that goes?
