Why does he need time to clear his head?

I talked to a guy on insta for 5 months. We liked each other but I got busy and we didn't talk as much anymore. While i was talking to him i was dealing with my ex, because he wouldn't leave me alone so I told the guy some of the details. He knew I was dealing with my ex all 5 months and told me he didn't care that he still liked me. But then i told him that i was not okay emotionally and that i didn't want to pretend like i was available to meet new people but that i still liked him. Then He responded he lost feelings & that he didn't see a future with me. That he wasn't ready to commit to just one person and that I was great but it was just him that he wanted to meet more people. so them he suggested to be friends. At first I said it would be best if we said goodbye but then the next day I accepted being just friends. Now he says he need time to clear his head. Does he not want to be friends with me anymore? or what did i do wrong for him to need time, he was the one who suggested to be friends in the first place. or am i misunderstanding something?
