Question Background:  I've noticed from feedback that younger/poorer boys are adamant about their women looking basic and boring (No make-up, no heels, no revealing clothes, blah, blah, blah)... I assume it's to make themselves feel more secure in the relationship... "Basically the uglier she is and the lower her self esteem the better chances they have at getting lucky OR maybe she would be so insecure that she can't see your flaws and "other" shortcomings"... But financially independent and confident men promote AND invest into their woman and encourages them to look their best at all times... Author's Note:  This is my experience... Your experience may be different and I want to hear about it... I just find these behaviors bizarre and extremely interesting so I figured I would ask a question...

So I appreciate the effort, the art and practice of it. However the context around make up and women has a long history. Overall it is to attract more potential mates by appearing flawless.

The use case today has not changed. Instead there is an awareness that women need to look to a certain standard and it is held both ways. Compete against other women and for male attention. Now this is pushed down on women through most forms of media. Ads, insta, and their social groups. If all of the women around them are wearing makeup then I should too. Or I look less of a women or feel less confident because I am not flawless without it, etc.

So... I tried to poll how women feel about makeup and why. I have talked to my friend about it too. And it comes down to confidence. They feel more confident with it than without. Strange isn't it? I'd like to see more women be confident without such things. If they want to have flawless skin or close to it, then why not just take care of your skin? It's not easy, it may be a daily task like our daily hygiene routines. I think it may be more cost effective as you may not need to apply it everyday.

So boy vs man perspective is nonsensical to me because whether it is a boy, teen or man they would all have a different stance. It really depends on their experience around women and makeup. One of my coworker told me her relationship with makeup. She said growing up her father would not let her go outside unless she wore makeup. To me that is extreme but ever since there has not been a day where I have seen her without makeup on her perfectly. Now the father's point of view of makeup has to stem from his past relationship too because he must have had some experience to say my daughters have to wear makeup before going outside. When did this occur? From when he was a child/teen? Maybe. As an adult possible but to me less likely.

Poor or rich... I don't think that matter too much. I think in this day and age it's just what you have come to accept. Whether it is women look so much better with makeup that going back makes no sense. Or natural is the only way to go or only special occasions. It's preference.

This brings me back to Mulan the animation. Where Mulan is facing the duality of her life as a woman, daughter, warrior, and potential wife. She battles the social norms looking at her reflection with half her make up on. She is all of the above. It is just a choice she has to make.

As for the guys... I think it is simple as... if we like you without make up then with it I don't think much would change. But in reverse I don't think the same could be said.

If a woman puts on makeup everyday, can you class this as putting in the effort? It's a standard thing that they do, so they aren't doing anything abnormal for themselves.

I, personally, am not a fan of makeup, I appreciate it for special occasions, but everyday, tells me that they aren't happy in their own skin. It tells me that they are buying into "women wear makeup, so I must wear makeup to fit in/push ahead/be attractive". This isn't right, I feel that women are almost brainwashed into doing this to make people huge amounts of money! (Makeup ISN'T cheap!)

It's become a societal norm in a lot of countries, and the only way to break it is if people stop doing it and people stop mocking people who don't do it.

Makeup can look amazing, it can make a beautiful person even more so. But if you constantly look even more beautiful, that just becomes beautiful. Pushing standards higher. If people are used to a certain level, that level becomes standard, this works with food, drink, TV, sex, anything really!

You also have the premise that when wearing makeup, you look perfect. Perfection isn't natural, we like to see flaws in others that make them more human. Makeup hides these flaws.

If by MEN you mean mature then yes of course. I don't get why people hate on those wearing makeup to look prettier (even goes for guys hating on other guys who are celebs/actors/stars). Frankly butch women are more of a "man" than most guys nowadays who are nothing more than bitter and insecure towards women.

I think my only question for this is, when did wearing makeup become synonymous with making an effort? Does that mean that if you don't wear makeup and heels and a dress then you aren't making an effort? Why does dressing moderately mean that you aren't trying?

It takes skill to apply makeup attractively, and I definitely appreciate the effort.

In recent years I've been noticing people who I may not have paid any attention to otherwise, except that they have found a particular way of dressing or applying makeup that accentuates their assets and makes them stand out in an attractive way. I've come to refer to those people as "someone who has found their own style".When I notice someone like that who has caught my eye, I'll look around at other people as well as myself and think, what if this person or that person or myself were to have a personal style revelation? How might their lives or my life change as a result?
I'm no fashionista. I dress casually all the time. It just makes me wonder sometimes.

One additional comment - I saw a young woman on a TV show who was dressed for an outdoor adventure trek. I thought that she was cute, but I don't think that I would have paid a whole lot of attention to her if I'd seen her somewhere in real life. I continued to watch the show and found out that she is a very famous, gorgeous supermodel.

So, yes, makeup definitely makes a difference to me.

Maybe? I hadn’t noticed the trend. If it’s true I could throw out a few possible explanations:
- older guys may be more self aware of what they actually like. Younger guys may notice some makeup they don’t like but aren’t noticing they like more subtle makeup.
- I think maybe as we all get older there’s more tacit acceptance that looking good is an effort. You can be 20 and have good genetics and roll out of bed and look great. That shit doesn’t work at my age lol. At the very least you almost certainly need to be aware of your exercise/diet but likely more then that. So we may be more like “yup like partners who care” cause people our age who don’t make any effort look like crap.
- we may be thinking of different things. Full on Instagram style makeup is quite uncommon among older people - it’s something only young women seem to have the time and dedication for. (Also it wasn’t as in style years ago). I just didn’t grow up around women wearing heavy full face of makeup unless they were in some subculture goth or something. Then again I liked that so I don't know.

Putting in extra effort to look good does not necessarily mean that a girl looks like she got painted by Earl Schieb or Maaco with 5 coats of baking enamel! If she is washed, reasonably well groomed, with neat hair that flatters her face- regardless of her face shape- and wears nice clothes appropriate to the situation, that is is great in my (old) book.

Now on the other hand, if you are playing "slut night" with your guy, maybe you DO want to look like a plastic Barbie and he could look like Ken.

to me its about presenting a false self. if all that us ever seen is the you with makeup on, then to me i dont ever get to see the true or real you. which comes iff as dishonesty ir a lie in my book, all be it a minor-ish one. also too much emphasis is put on makeup making a woman look good, when in reality most acutally look better without the makeup. use your natural beauty instead of some company making money off your insecurities idea of beauty.

as for revealing clothes, that is more of a her prefference type of thing.

the heeks thing comes from knowing the physical damage they cause women who constantly wear them. i have an aunt who wore them for decades, now she has major nerve damage in her feet from it. can hardly wear anythung besides flip-flops ir sandles due to this. also plays a bigger role than most realize in women's back problems. keeps you off balanced and pushed forward. then there is the impractical side to them. any situation requiring faster than a brisk walk movement is hindered by heels.

Well it's kind of a mixed bag for me. Growing up before I graduated from high school, I did not pay too much attention to what women did in the way of makeup and glamming themselves up. I did not really care too much if they wore it or not. I'm pretty sure it didn't really change their opinion about their self-esteem or whether they had a low opinion about themselves. I just enjoyed talking with everyone and if they did not want to talk to me it didn't hurt my feelings.

After high school, I heard a lot more opinions from women about how they needed to fix their makeup before they go out, about how they loved this kind of eye shadow , lipstick, or if they were running out of foundation. And of course, like every typical male, I always put my foot in that bear trap and said you look fine as is, you really look better without makeup. “

(Of course, to this day, even though I meant it from the bottom my hear, I still blame this as my reasoning for not getting more dates... LOL )

If someone actually needs to use the makeup, whether it's man or woman, they should use it. But, if it is a complete transformation from wearing makeup to being completely unrecognizable, then they should consider cutting back.

If someone cannot love you the same when you're not wearing makeup, those individuals don't deserve to be in your life.

Nearly all men like and appreciate when women wear makeup and look nice.

HOWEVER, many, if not most men, prefer more natural-looking women (vs. makeup and hair styles that are more highly stylized), and prefer more casual clothing styles rather than fancier styles - the exception being wealthy people who live in major metro centers - NYC, LA, Chicago, Miami, where image is more important (in large part because the very wealthiest in the entire country tend to live in these areas, and have crazy amounts of disposable income, and use it to dress and style themselves to gain attention and status among each other). But the distortion is a result of wealth, not "maturity."

Middle or upper-middle class men tend to prefer women who are feminine but casual in style. By that, I mean they like women in dresses and skirts, but they're not looking for designer clothes, nor do they want women who are dressed daily like they're going to a nightclub or red carpet or high-powered business meeting. Expensive designer clothes and generally "high fashion" is seen as frivolous and high-maintenance unless you've got several million or more in annual income - and even then, it tends to be bought by people who are new to having a lot of money, or people who are very concerned about their public/celebrity image.

If you've watched the Hunger Games movies (or read the books), this is represented by the wild fashions and elaborate hair styles worn by people living in "the capital." They're wealthy to the point where they have to find new ways to spend their money, while everyone else struggles just to get enough food to survive. It's an exaggerated version of reality - but not that exaggerated.

Well all my life I have felt it some of the things women do to attract their man isn't worth it to me because I don't think you want somebody that's superficial yes I like seeing a woman in high heels but at the same time I know it's hurting her back and if I love her I'm not going to want her hurting her back the same with getting big boobs

I think the reason is different. There's a lessons guys need to learn which girls primaly don't use make up to impress us. Guys assume that females use make up to impress guys because we think that you think we just for perfectly beautys. For guys love is much about trust. We feel not trust worthy if women always use make up to meet us. I am personally against makeup. The reason is that it hides the real woman behind it. I don't want to wake up beside a girl only to find out that he skin is not actually that color, that her eyes weren't actually that big... That is a different girl. I feel lied to. I want to see how pale or dark your skin is, I want to see the wrinkles if you have them.. Just as I ask for sincerity when talking, I also want it with how you look.
I understand using some makeup to correct some small and punctual things like acne or similar, that's it.
I don't hate women who use makeup, but I am less attracted to them. If they lie about how they actually look like, what else could they be lying about?

I may be the exception to the rule. I am neither poor nor young and I prefer little to no make up. But It doesn't bother me if a girl wears makeup. I do appreciate her efforts and I would not complain unless it is caked on so much that it is starting to flake off... You have seen it too I am sure?
What is beauty? Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, well not according to name brand companies that make makeup. They use models and tell the public what they want them to hear and their idea of what beauty should be. But one thing they can not deny... There were beautiful women before there was makeup... Yes makeup has been around for a long long time, but beautiful woman a lot longer.

makeups largest effect in the enviroment around you is to attract a mate. i dont know about boys and men. but single women wearing makeup makes sense. taken women can be a bit awkward in a lot of situations. best avoid a woman who gets ready for two hours to "go to the grocery store" and returns smelling like latex and axe.

I'm like the "natural" look, but I'm not a fan of the styles where the makeup is obvious.

But that being said, I do find certain things a bit too much, like those fake nails and fake eye lashes or extremely thick layers of makeup, doesn't look appealing or attractive to me.

I believe women should wear makeup if they want to if it makes them feel pretty, but I think they should apply just enough to not look cheap and desperate.

Definitely not true, from what I've seen most guys are completely fine with girls wearing makeup, heels etc.

Makeup helps girls feel more confident about themselves and it's fun for girls to put it on, so nothing wrong with that.

For me I'm totally fine with girls wearing makeup, I'd prefer it though if she doesn't go over the top.
