What does it mean when a man is often online the whole time when the woman is offline but then when the woman comes online he either way goes offline or is alternately online and offline.

Simple it means that the person isn't interested in talking right now. He's on when your not, you on when he's not. If he is on and off it means he is busy doing things, checking notifications or he is speaking to other people. If they notice you, they assume your busy and cannot speak unless you message them. Private people like myself usually don't like to bother people unless we need to and given okay. So if you see a person online, can you not communicate and shoot a message? You and adult. Start communicating. You two just have different timing.

Could be just the system your using thinks he's online because either he's left the window open on his computer or not logged out properly and your connection is just refreshing things pushing him offline.

I wouldn't read too much into it if he was avoiding you he'd probably just leave it on appear offline all the time
