I have a female friend that I also look after. She's very nice and we're very close, but she's my friend and it will never become more than that. Many years ago, after her fiancée (who I always thought was a loser) broke up with her, she asked me to come over and talk. Once I arrived it was clear what she wanted; she was weak and vulnerable, but I was equally clear "I'll sit here with you all night, but I can't be here for "THAT".
She's now married to a nice guy and has as lovely daughter. Her husband recognizes me as an old friend and he has no issues with the two of us going out for lunch, or even going to dinner together. Yes, it is possible for men and women to be friends... and only friends.
