Guy doesn't seem to hate me... but he doesn't seem to like me either. Why would he act so unusual?

I work next to this guy and we used to talk a lot throughout the day, just two co-workers passing the time. We discovered that we share the same interests, hobbies, tastes, sense of style, etc. We would have fun working together.

Things became awkward between us when he started acting unusual for no apparent reason. He acts like we have nothing in common. If I like something, suddenly he hates it. If I find something funny, he now thinks it's stupid. I'm not sure how to explain it, but he acts like he's against me. He won't have a conversation with me but occasionally he mentions an observation he made about me. I think he looks at/watches me. He also tries to copy me and what I do. I don't think he hates me... but I don't think he likes me either. I don't understand.

Could be a million reason, maybe you did or said something to him or about him that he didn’t like without you realize,
maybe someone said something bad about you behind your back,
maybe he likes you but he felt he is in your friend zone so he is trying to change being mr. nice guy,
or maybe he is crazy…
I don’t think the reason is seeing someone else because if he is he wouldn’t go against you, he just won’t be thinking about you that much.
Anyway I think you should just keep acting normal and confident, live ur life and don’t think of it as your problem.

Different things could be at play there. Maybe he sensed some sort of chemistry either between both of you or just one, and he’s trying to backpedal bc you know, work romances suck and all that. Maybe he’s dating someone he’s trying to respect, or a female coworker he’s trying not to make jealous. There may not even be an issue but you feel like there’s one because his behavior is a bit different. Regardless, I’d follow his lead, which looks like it’s him trying to back off in some way. I hate forcing conversations or trying to break the ice just bc someone else switches up. If he wants to be weird then I’d just be cordial, do my job then leave it at the door when I go home. Work friendships never feel real anyway, just two people trying to pass the time.

Is he gay? If he's not gay then I think he has a crush in you but instead if acting like a normal person he instead acts rude towards you. Everyone acts directly when they are around someone they like. Unfortunately, he's the type to throw verbal rocks at the girls he likes.
