Why is my guy friend so sensitive to everything I say?

I feel like I'm walking around a minefield. He doesn't explode or anything. Just sits there quietly absorbing everything I say with an uncomfortable intensity - even normal conversation. Sometimes he interrupts me to ask me why I said what I said.
It's just normal conversation and jokes amongst friends, but I feel on edge around him. He tries his best to be polite though, that I can say for sure, but I don't know what's going on in his head at any time and it sometimes makes me anxious.
Also I've caught him staring at me multiple times - neither of us acknowledge the staring. He gets a little miffed if I talk about others guys and withdraws if he thinks it's something serious.

About the last part of your ask, I think he might like you and about his behaviour, he might be a HSP person.

Ohhh. I'm also a sensitive person and I didn't pick up on him being sensitive at all. Although I'm not around him that much.

So earlier you claim you know how he interacts with other people because "you are around him 8 hours a day"... now you say you "aren't around him that much"...😂 😂 So which is it?

Maybe that's just the stuff at he is with everyone and you are projecting feelings into him that he does not really have

Like I heard people Calling him a nickname and so I called him that and he was who where did you hear that and I was like everyone's calling you that? And it took him a few minutes to move on from that

I have asked him before about different things and he doesn't really give straightforward explanations. Gives a sort of generic explanation and looks embarassed and flushed.

Because we're in the same classes for 8 hours a day

He seems pretty confident and high up in the social hierarchy based on how other guys treat him
