There is this dude I want to get to know as a friend, but his texts are very short. Should I keep trying or should I just stop?
Texting, in and of itself, is not a medium that it is easy to elaborate within. The keyboard is exceptionally small, you need to hold the phone while you text and that can be awkward... IT's not a relaxing thing to do, as is writing an answer on your laptop or emailing. It IS fast. But not about detail.
Texting is best to relay facts or SHORT NOTES... I'll meet you here at this time. That dress you wore yesterday was cute. My dog is sick. At the vet right now.. Turn left at Center St and my house is past the corner of Center and Aline, a block up...
ANd then there's the issue that he's JUST A DRY PERSON. He's not interested in offering more than he does because he doesn't text much or he doesn't have much of a personality.
There are too many unknowns to KNOW what the reason is.
Maybe he's simply not interested in talking to you. BUT these are all guesses. You can always ASK the guy. Maybe you'll get a direct answer that will satisfy you or you'll decide to stop texting him because it doesn't look like there's a possible friendship in the offing.

He may be a bit nervous and doesn't want to screw up indicated by the haha at the end. Who knows. There could be a lot of reasons tbh. I text like this generally because I am busy or the topic doesn't interest me. If the topic interests me I send out my actual thoughts.
You could try to follow it up with more questions like: What about hiking do you like so much? (loaded question I know).
It shows him that you are actually interested in him or at least his interests. Everybody enjoys when people are interested in their hobbies.
Another theory. He may not be a good texter or doesn't like it and likes to talk more in real life. There are people like that. One of my best friends is like this. His texts are short and shallow but in real life he can't shut up.
I think you should keep trying a bit more if you are not comfortable with being direct or with making plans. The reason for this is due to the exposure principle. A lot of actors that work together on a movie (male lead and female lead) often end up in relationships after the movie is done. Why? Simple because they spend a lot of time together. I think the more he becomes exposed to you the more he will like you. You can try this tactic. You could just make it a habit to text him once day or something and check it off. But at the same time don't drag it out too much and know when to move on.
If you're not interest in dating him and only looking to be his "friend" then yeah you should stop wasting your time and his. If you want to date the guy then you should text less and talk more or go out more together and rate him on his in person performance and personality before jumping to any conclusions.
Some people like me hate texting. I do it enough to get dates and to have girlfriends that I date and have sex with. But if a girl just wants to be my "friend" and text me... then yeah I don't put any effort into it.
No. If they are texting you dryly- they have nothing good, whatsoever, to offer you on any relationship basis, whether you were independent, or not.
It shows they see no value in speaking with you. They don’t value you.
If they were a genius, somehow- they’d understand you were *someone who deserved a chance to get to know.* They’d respect your time, and realize their own time is too precious to waste in small talk, with just anyone.
If they had a good heart, they’d show some care about you, and put- at the very least- some effort into their messages.
To do neither, they show they aren’t a good hearted person, they’re not intellectual enough to consider your worth or respect you as a person, and they don’t value at all.
Drop them like a piece of styrofoam- emotionless, heartless, brainless, and you can’t relate to it. It just says a few English words, but what does that do for you? 🤲😕
Be strong. Move on. You got this.

Ways to Respond to a Dry Text
When you receive a dry text, it can be tempting to respond with something equally unengaging. However, there are ways to respond to a dry text that can make the conversation more interesting.
Here are a few suggestions:
Ask a question
Asking a question is a great way to get the other person to elaborate on their text. You can ask about their day, what they’re up to, or anything else that might get them talking.
Make a joke
A little bit of humor can go a long way in livening up a dry conversation. If you can make the other person laugh, they’ll be more likely to engage in the conversation.
Share something interesting
If you have something interesting to share, do it! This can be anything from a funny story to an article you read that you think they’d enjoy.
Compliment them
A compliment can make the other person feel good and encourage them to keep talking to you.
Be positive
No one wants to talk to someone who is always negative. If you can keep the conversation upbeat, it’ll be more enjoyable for both of you.
By following these tips, you can turn a dry conversation into an engaging one. So next time you receive a text that lacks excitement, don’t be afraid to spice it up yourself.
How do you fix dry conversations?
It can be frustrating when you're stuck in a dry conversation. You know the kind - where both you and the other person are just kind of sitting there, not really sure what to say next. The good news is that there are ways to fix dry conversations.
Here are a few tips:
1. Change the subject.
If you're feeling like the conversation is starting to lag, try changing the subject. This can be as simple as asking the other person a question about something else.
2. Introduce a new topic.
If you're stuck for something to say, try introducing a new topic. This can be something you're interested in or something you think the other person might be interested in.
3. Get personal.
Sometimes, the best way to break the ice is to get personal. Ask the other person about their life, their interests, or anything else that might get them talking.
4. Tell a story.
Stories are a great way to liven up a conversation. If you have a funny story or an interesting story to tell, share it!
5. Ask a question.
Questions can be a great way to keep a conversation going. If you're not sure what to say next, try asking the other person a question.
With these tips, you should be able to fix any dry conversation. Just remember to be yourself and to keep the conversation flowing.

depends a lot on what the topic is, how often do you find yourself asking questions like "how are you" or the one above that most likely results in short answers? try starting a convo about something you can actually talk about. What do you expect from texting a boy "What do you like to do?" he will most likely say a word or two and end the sentence with "wbu". Next time try asking more such as "What have you done today?" if he still replies with a short answer such as your previous example: "Hiking and playing tennis" you could ask him where he was hiking or where he plays tennis at so maybe sometime you and him can have a game. If you want to be friends then this will also help you get to know each other more. Hopefully this helps sorry that the reply was kinda shit
Some people are just bad at texting. Like, I had a friend who was GREAT on the phone and GREAT in person, but talking to him via text was HORRIBLE. 😂
So, maybe you can try meeting up or calling him as someone suggested earlier.
If he doesn’t want to, it may mean he’s just really busy, he’s not quite comfortable enough with you yet, or he’s just not too interested. Some people are bad texters but are able to hold a good conversation when you meet them in person. If you're looking forward to meeting him and want to keep this friendship, try your shot. If it's just an online friendship, I don't think it'll work this way.
Depends, if you connect more on person he’s probably not good at texting. If he’s always like that maybe he’s not as interested as you are. If you’re the one that texts first try to give him a few days without talking and see if he tries to reach out
No I don't ever persue dry texters or one worders. Once you start being dry and one wording I usually don't respond and the conversations over or i block the person. A dry testers tells me I'm dealing with a dim person & inside they're probably as dead as they text.
Pick up the phone and call him, have a real conversation instead through text or plan an evening out together. You can read people through a text.
I think you should keep that door open maybe he's shy Maybe he's busy every time that he sends you a text but at least you're telling him that you're interested and there's nothing wrong with that I think it's cool
Try another media, like call him, that will tell you more about if he can hold a conversation or not.
Guys usually aren’t as good at communicating as we are. Maybe try finding other avenues instead of texting he might open up on.
No. You’re worth more then short ass replies. I hate when people are like that in texting. Maybe he’s just like that naturally but if it seems like he doesn’t want to talk at all then just dead it bc u don’t need that
You should stop… if he’s a bad texter but he wants to see you he’ll let you know! You’ve obviously have been texting him so he knows you’re interested… let the man be a man and take you out…
Some people just suck at texting. Maybe y'all should get dinner or something instead lol but if I really like someone I will text them even if they are really boring. (Only if we vibe in person tho)
Identify the objective. As a guy, sometimes chicks text us and we don't really fully engage because we don't know wtf they want.
I text this guy who's a dry texter sometimes. He has autism, so it might be that, but I don't actually know the extent of how it affects him. I suggest only texting if you really, really, feel like talking to anyone. Otherwise, just don't bother too much.
Why waste time on someone like that when the next guy might gush all over you?
Maybe try to get to know him in person, rather than by text.
Stop texting or making effort and let him miss you. If he doesn’t text back or bother at all to make plans then you’ll know where you stand and should move on.
No! If they aren’t going to put any effort into it, why should you?
Why not just ask him if he enjoys texting you? He probably would prefer talking in person.
No, forget it
Those people are boring as hell
