Why is he so confusing?

I have a crush on a guy I have known for a long time. He doesn't really know about said crush and has never mentioned liking me. We get on so well and I love him as a person, he has helped me through so much and always there for me. We once spoke about relationships and he said what we have is too important to him that he wouldn't risk it in any way. We text almost every day and I am not always the one to initiate (I would say it is quite 50/50). I have met his family and friends (obviously, a lot of our friends are mutual).

For my birthday he done the most thoughtful thing and it truly made me happy, no one has been that thoughtful for me before and I really appreciated it. Even though we have known each other for a long time, he has never done anything like this before. He also set up a visit to a museum for us both to go to together next month.

The confusing part of all this, a couple of days after this event he asked me if I would like him to set me up with his mate. Maybe I have read too much into things as it is what I want but not what he wants. I know he is a shy introvert and things are difficult to be open with but why so confusing?
