Why did he refuse to go to a movie and does he like me?

Hi, everyone. I recently met a new classmate this semester. We exchanged numbers and are friendly in class and we sit next to each other. He texted me to ask if I wanted to hangout with him and I said sure, we can hangout. I suggested a movie at the cinema and his response was ‘that sounds good but after some time that would be better” and further said he wants to go to a park I like and have a small picnic instead. Since we are just hanging out I wasn’t quite sure why he chose a picnic over a movie at the cinema? Does he have an interest in me as just a classmate and friend? Thanks everyone for your input
