Why do strangers think it’s appropriate to comment on someone’s looks?

I meet strangers who usually tell me that I look sexy or beautiful etc… why do people think it’s appropriate to comment on someone’s looks. Like how is one supposed to reply,,, I only walk by them and don’t say anything most of the time or just say thanks… but is it not highly inappropriate to tell someone they look sexy.

Of course sexy and alike might be too invasive. But pretty, cute, beautiful etc? Why not?

Honestly I find looks to be just about the least personal thing you can comment about. So if we can't make a positive comment even about something as public as that then we are effectively banning expressing any opinions (including only uplifting ones!) to anyone we do not know. Surely that is a rather dull and bleak world if we look at the principle?

Girls generally focus a lot of attention on their looks, so guys feel they want to be noticed. Just tell them you prefer being noticed for what you do rather than how you look. People follow the patterns they've been socialized with. Educate them about alternatives, and maybe you can influence a change.
