Guy asks you if his age is "too old" for you?

When speaking to a guy I know, he mentioned that someone had passed away. He said they were quite old, 71, and I replied "oh that's not that old" and he thought about it a second, and said "I suppose that's true" he then said "what about 40, is that old to you" (his age) and I just laughed it off.

He kept looking at me, still expecting an answer but I just diverted the topic a bit. I've always seen him as an equal to me regardless of the age difference between us (10 years or so), so the question threw me a bit. What could his intention behind it mean?

Could be testing the waters or just curious to know from a woman your age if he’s considered too old to date
