Why would a guy give mixed signals?

We started talking and he used to call everyday before we went on the first date. After everything just changed, no calls just short messages on Instagram and then nothing. I don't understand why can't he be honest about the situation, like what are we just going to play dumb and play friends?

Most likely he didn’t have a good time on the date and is trying to be “nice” but should just be straight with you. Short replies, if any replies, typically mean he’s not that interested.
