Guy friend told me he loved me over the phone?

So , this guy friend of mine that lives in a different city called me after a work party ( I used to work there too) and we were talking while he was near my best friend. He used to have a major crush on another friend of ours and I knew that. Anyway, he was going on about me coming to visit next week and when i was close to putting an end to the call he told me " I love you" and I had no reaction. Ended the call quickly. I´m 27 and he´s too.

Was this just a friendly thing? We haven´t talked since.

Ask. Make the intentions clear. I cannot stress this enough. Find out what he meant. It's that simple. Do not assume, you will just ruin a friendship. Communication is important in all relationships, not only the sexual ones.

How do I ask without causing any distress? Can I just refer back to the call and ask him what he meant? It´s been two days since and I don´t want to make it awkward for him. I was kinda blindsided.

Just ask. Don't bluntly confront him but don't beat around the bush too much. And your thinking is probably the best, refer to the call. Just make sure you make your feelings towards him completely transparent. But don't hurt the poor soul.
