I don't want to psychoanalyze anyone but you say they're a narcissist do you mean like a mental illness like delusional and erratic or just someone who's full of themselves? The way you describe them distancing themselves then coming back and acting like nothing is wrong sounds familiar. Counselling can help, especially in the cases where they're clearly self destructive actions. Even self centred dicks don't like their behaviour if it's self sabotaging. I guess the tough thing about that is if they even want help and how accessible such facilities are in your area.
I've never had a person yell at me to leave them alone, much less gone back afterwards to ponder if they are done with me.
You should probably take the "hint"... it's time to move on.

Narcissists rarely cut ties. They have to find a new victim first and even then most prefer to bother as many people as possible
