Guys, Is my boss playing me?

I think my boss is playing with me professionally and emotionally but i need a mans take on it. Its been three years of highs and lows.

-He gives me glowing reviews and payrises and although he says he trusts my judgement he won't give me bigger projects or expand my role. This is dispite the fact his boss said he wants to promote me (likely because my boss always fights my corner) however, my boss has never discussed this big future promotion with me directly.

At one point (for about 6 months straight) he flirted with me and often messaged me out of hours about non work things. He even messaged me when he was on holiday. He then ignored me for months and we are 'normal' again now. He wants to be friendly with me but on his terms.

-he is my biggest supporter to others and always has my back but always ends up jumping in meetings he says he wants me to lead.

- he will ignore my messages sometimes but will bring me coffees and sweets.

Is this just his management style? Did he have a crush on me but has changed his mind? How the hell to do play this?

Yes to all of the above. It's always awkward when a boss has a crush on you. Every time I've been down that road it's been a shite show. Also, he could be not very keen on you getting promoted because then he loses you, and if you're the rockstar of the team... well... I mean that is shite leadership, but there are shite leaders out there. When you guys are on good terms ask him over coffee or doughnuts in the break room or whatever you do.

good reviews are real, not playing
