Is it true that guys compartmentalize everything in life to the point that they can only "label" a person in one specific category at a time?

I have a colleague who can't think about anyone as being a possible "personal" connection but also a possible lead for a job.

Another guy from my neighborhood has the same perspective.

And I've started noticing more and more that guys tend to put a person (male OR female) in a mental category (e. g., friend, colleague, client, etc.) and don't like to have any sort of overlap in the categories, whereas women will have a capacity to connect with clients and colleagues on a more personal level (e. g., asking if the person has kids, learning their interests, etc.).

What do you think the reason for this is? Do you think it's a common pattern in MOST guys or perhaps just a fluke?
