Because your lower back isn't properly exercised. Many people who work their core think that "core" only means abdomen, when in fact your lower back and obliques are as much of your core as your abdomen is. In fact, your lower back is probably a little more important in terms of what you should workout.
The muscles in your lower back, obliques, and abdomen are really the only thing that help support your spine. Your chest and upper back area has more bone and muscle for various roles, but if you look at a skeleton you'll see that your abdomen and lower back have nothing but your spine.
So if you never work your lower back at all, then you're asking it to push and pull on your body to support the spine when it just isn't up to the task. Try incorporating back extensions, deadlifts, and 'good mornings' into your core workouts.
