I will wear boxer briefs most often to the gym. On days like arm days where I'm not really doing many exercises that move my whole body, I might just wear whatever I happen to have on (either BB's or regular boxers). But yeah, mostly it's boxer briefs... gotta hold everything in place.
I did a bit of football back in high school and we wore boxer briefs as the "base layer", then the football girdle with cup and the padding around the legs and lower back/upper pelvis, then pants over that.

I run in asics asx bikini. Comfortable, soft, they stay where they are supposed to stay.
I usually wear thongs. Less material to get in the way.
