Scared I will build bigger muscles at the gym... what kind of exercises should I do?

Last year I went to the gym and I usually used the rowing machine for 20 minutes, elliptical for 10 and running 30-45 min. After one month I gained muscle and I could hardly fit into my jeans. My aim was to tone up and lose 2-3 kg.
At the time I also had some binge eating problems.
Now I have joined the gym again and worried that the same thing might happen. I don't have the binge eating problem anymore. What should I do to tone up and lose a few kgs without getting my thighs bigger? I want to get leaner. Thanks:-)
