How to curb an appetite for sweets and desserts?

So I've always been obsessed with any type of dessert & have a major sweet tooth. Cheesecake, cupcakes, cookies, ice cream, cereal, etc. The first thing I do when I wake up is crave any one of these items. I've been dieting since September as best I can, but I still get the same cravings. I haven't given in to them as of yet, but I was wondering if you have any helpful tips to avoid these cravings. I refuse to have any of these because when I have one I just end up having 4 and regretting it later. Once I start I just can't stop, lol :P
