If you want Fat, Come to Northern England (Or the UK in General) or My house lmao!
Poll: WHY do people say Americans are Fat?
If you want Fat, Come to Northern England (Or the UK in General) or My house lmao!
Because of statistics. The USA is the most obese industrialized nation in the world. There are higher obesity rates in some of the little South Pacific island nations... Samoa, Tonga... places like that, but when it comes to places with high populations, the USA is number 1. 33% obesity rate, which is incredibly alarming. The reason why you think it is similar in the UK is simply because the UK is up there as well, at 26.9%. There are a lot of 'western' countries in that 26ish range though. Far fewer up in the 30s.
There is also going to be a discrepancy because of TV. A lot of UK television does a very good job at casting 'real' looking actors. Their actors run a gamut of body shapes and levels of attractiveness. American TV is dominated by super attractive, super fit actors that are far less representative of the American population as a whole. Even people playing 'ugly' or 'awkward' characters would be considered well-above average phsically.
A "clip of Americans" is essentially a TV show full of models and actors with body proportions that don't represent the general public. It's like watching Victoria Secret and assuming all American women look like that. You've got to be pretty daft...
Just walk around Texas or Utah and you'll see what fat really is.
I hope these links to the World Health Organization, US News, and the CIA will clarify the obesity statistics for you

America is pretty large, so I guess when you see images or videos they are shot in certain places where they are more health conscious. It's a stereotype though, just like I hear "fat, obnoxious, loud American" and I am none of those.

because they are lol. just look up the statistics and consensus data.
I remember watching the movie "Gone Baby Gone", which takes place in a rundown neighbourhood in Boston. It was the first time I had seen "real" people in a Hollywood movie. There were some really ugly, almost deformed people in it, and part of it looked as if it was the result of malnutrition.
Most entertainment glosses over these things, or caricatures it. That is not exclusive to the U. S. Entertainment is escapism to make you forget dreary life.
Statistics don't lie, the USA has a very high percentage of obesity, one of the higher ones in the world actually.
www.worldobesity.org/.../
And you're right, the UK also has a pretty high percentage, but not as high as the USA.
It's just a stereotype that stuck. It's the same with saying everyone in the UK has messed up yellow teeth but we know that is untrue. The average weight is within a 5-10 pound difference between most countries so its just a uninformed argument.
because studies show that at least 1/3rd of americans are overweight, which is one of the highest rates of obesity in the world. Mexico is right there with them
only 1/3? I read comments saying 2/3.. that's a huge difference!
@bubble_tea
you're right. what i meant to say was obesity. 1/3rd of americans are obese, and 2/3rds are overweight
www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/obesity-overweight.htm
Well, maybe half of them are bodybuilders :D

@bubble_tea
lol, they wish!
maybe those youtube videos are mostly made downtown in LA and NY and both places are known to have the most health conscious residents.
But I get what you mean.. I see those videos and here than 2/3 of US Americans are overweight or obese even (?) and I'm like 'what? that's impossible'
American food is really fattening (hot dogs, cheeseburgers, pizza). Most people in the south belt are fat, unless they live on a coast (beach bodies).
It's true there's an obesity problem here. I think it does depend where you live, though. I live in Southern California, and I mostly just see a lot of slim to average people around.
Because their fat people are a LOT fatter than other countries fat people. The ratio probably isn't that different but they know how to supersize everything, especially morbid obesity.
lol not everyone in the UK is fat, or America for that matter, but in the states they do have high obesity rates
I don't get it either. There's fat and skinny people everywhere.
Compare the ingredients that are banned in the US compared to everywhere else in the world.
That alone will explain why Americans are fat.
**Err... Banned everywhere else in the world besides the US rather. (Bah screwed up my wording. >.<)
Of course not all Americans are fat, it's a stereotype. However obesity is a big problem there, but then again it's a problem in the developed world overall.
Cause we're all fat lards obviously.
Because that is what the stats say
It's call "the media", and also statistics.
Because about 1/3 of Americans are obese.
coz they are and dont trust the fucking media
Because they are fat.
Come to the South...
