Why is being overweight wrong, but being underweight is totally fine?

I saw a question on here a few months ago, 
and the girl said she was 5'7' and 96 pounds or something like that. She asked if that was okay, and guys said that was their preference and that she was totally fine. When people said that she was underweight and needed to gain some weight, they were downvoted and totally ignored. 

I was just wondering... Is being underweight bad too? I see overweight people post pictures too and people don't hesitate to tell them that's wrong. Just curious.

Both underweight and overweight shouldn't be encouraged but overweight is clearly the worst of two wrongs.

For one, rescuing overweight people is a danger in it self.

Being overweight comes with increased risk for all sorts of stuff. Arthritis, cancer, reduced cognitive function, cardiovascular diseases, depression, pneumonia, sleep apnea, and diabetes type II.

It's basic physics, being overweight also takes more energy to move it around, to wash (if they bother to), and to feed its regular diet. Fatties require more gas, water, and food to maintain its lifestyle.

The percentage of overweight people are on rise encompassing over 75% of the American population... FEWER than 2% are underweight. An epidemic of fat adults AND CHILDREN certainly exists.

Why do fatties get treated poorly compared to the not-fats? Because its obvious to most why they are fat.. Especially the children. I'd say for the significant majority (I'm talking around 98~99%) of current fatties, they've eaten and fed themselves and children to their size. They exhibit poor self-control and it is repulsive to see people with dangling FUPA (S). Even more repulsive is to see what they feed themselves.

Height and weight are not the best measures of whether or not someone is under or over weight. BMI is an outdated method, better to go by waistline and height. Now if someone was at the size you mentioned and trying to lose weight may be concerning, but as long as they look healthy at there current weight they should be fine.

Same thing happened to me (except, I didn't recieve any downvotes or even upvotes), a girl was 10 to 20 pounds under weight (she posted her picture too) and all the guys who commented, said that she looked fine and they prefer her like that.

However, I have also seen cases were girls who were over weight with a little stomach, that were told by guys that she looked fine (on How Do I Look).

Maybe the guys who are saying that don't understand that a person's normal weight depends on their height or they just don't care.

Yeah no, usually underweight people get labeled "anorexic" pretty quickly and are told to "go eat a burger". The guys who said that weighing only 96 lbs is fine probably don't have any idea what's a healthy weight + height for a girl. Especially if she didn't post any pics either. Had she posted pics, she would have probably gotten a lot more harsh comments

Being overweight is not wrong it is unhealthy get the difference right. Also most people think its ok because its glorified by the media and the modeling industry. Also most people view obesity as an epidemic and are afraid of being that way thus they treat fat people so terribly. Either way someone elses body is none of your business unless you are seriously concerned about their health not the way they look.

I am a very skinny guy and get made fun of for it all the time. It really hurts because people will just rip into you about it without being aware they are actually really hurting my feelings. I would say that overweight adults get openly made fun of less then underweight adults because there is a stigma behind making fun of overweight people when you become an adult. Kids definitely make fun of fat people though which isn't cool, I would know because I was a chubby kid hahaha

So to give an oversimplified answer to your question... Yes.

If it's unhealthily underweight then go eat a cheeseburger for your health's sake, but that doesn't mean it's unattractive.

Overweight is generally less attractive than underweight, well, for me personally and based on what I see from polls. But apparently a lot of guys like a little fluff too.

Guys like what they like and underweight seems to not be as visually unappealing as overweight, unless you're full-on anorexic. Skeletor isn't hot.

Here's sort of my unique theory. Losing weight once significantly overweight is really a challenge and then you have to manage to keep it off and all. It's very easy to become fat and hard to reduce. I think when someone looks at a thin person, they wrongly assume that person works harder, skipped a few meals, or some other silly fable. They figure it would be easy for them to gain a few if need be so they body shame them less. People are jerks and ignorantly pick on heavier people.

It's not being a couple of piundsyover weight is actually healthier than being under weight or anorexic... Not obese but overweight. It's acty been proven that overweight people tend to live longer than average/healthy people.

Both are wrong in a health standpoint, but because media glorifies skinny, if you are skinny, you are awesome. And some people don't know what's a normal height and weight for the opposite gender. I don't know what should be a normal weight for a guy, I only know that if he isn't under 5'5", he shouldn't weight 110lbs.

it's both bad in the same way... being a little bit over- or underweight isn't bad but if it's too much it's unhealthy.
I guess most people are more okay with underweight because unless it gets too much they think it's more attractive
