Is there a way to be a little overweight, but not fat looking?

I was always quite slender, and then my life went to hell and I gained a bunch of weight. To be honest, I kinda dig my new curves, but not my fatness. I know losing body fat will take some of that off, but is there a way I can keep some of it?

Like lifting and yoga/Pilates with only mild cardio, for instance? And obviously some calorie reducing to bring the weight down some.
Is there a way to be a little overweight, but not fat looking?
