I was wondering if anyone here takes prescription meds for anxiety and which ones? How did the conversation with your doctor go?
Thanks!
Okay please read this, because I went through the exact same thing you are going through.. you sound like you have social anxiety, something I've had for 3 years, but it's barely here as of now.. It started in the 8th grade and I didn't know what was wrong with me, I never knew anything of anxiety, I noticed it the first week of school.. The teacher would call on me and my face would get red, I'd sweat, my heart pounding, my throat choking up.. And then I started getting anxiety attacks, breathing problems, I'd miss school a lot and when I had to go back id sit and cry in the car with my mom or dad until I just finally had to walk into my school and get the day over with.. I refused to do presentations, I'd take 0's on the assignments and this lasted all year, then high school came And I transferred.. Best decision I've ever made.. Because well, my social anxiety came upon me all because of bullying.. First depression and thank the anxiety.. Somehing about talking in front of people.. I felt so vulnerable.. But freshman year came and I still had the anxiety but some days I opened up and was about to talk in class, sophomore year, I had depression but not the anxiety.. Now, I have neither. I am better than I've ever been before. But anyway, my first medication was Zoloft.. I started it Sophomore year, absolutely terrible, for me at least.. I got even more depressed and I started to hate everyone and treat my family and friends so badly.. Bad personality change. Then I started Prozac.. Was alright at first i guess but it worn off but wait till what I have to say About all medications at the end.. Then I tried cymbalta, felt the same as I did without medicine.. Then came Vibryd, which made me crazy. So I came off medicine completely.. And while doing so I changed my whole way of thing.. After seeing that no medication didn't and isn't going to work for me, I had to count on myself.. I am not going to be depressed.. I am not going to be anxious... these two words have already ruined 3 years of my life, and I ain't going to ruin any more..' Life's to short for this shit ' basically. Please, don't try medications.. There have been so many articles out there that have proved that every single antidepressant only makes things worse. Or brings new problems to the surface. This year im going to be a junior.. I haven't had a sign of depression or anxiety in 2 months now, and man does it feel great.. Things have to get worse before they get better.
I was prescribed sertraline by my doctor for GAD. The conversation with my doctor was pretty simple, they gave me the paperwork and information on the drug, let me ask any questions and asked if I would like to try using it. I said that I'd try it and they gave me the prescription. Totally cool about it though obviously this was after I'd been diagnosed with GAD for quite a while and I'd been to see the doctor about it a few times, so they weren't just handing them out :P I started weaning myself off of them a few months ago and now don't really take them unless an episode gets really bad but they definitely did help.
Ah, I should also point out that, in addition to having been diagnosed for a while and having a few sessions with the doctor, I had also been attending therapy sessions with a counsellor which weren't very helpful but yeah - definitely don't expect to get drugs on your first go, they will try you with other options first.
Thanks for that! I didn't realize there was a whole process to this.
Oh, yeah, definitely. You'll need to be formally diagnosed (which for me was a couple of 'rate how you feel' kind of tests) and they'll discuss your options but it's very likely that they'll try you without medication at first because obviously if you can get better without putting loads of stuff in your body with all the side effects and what not, they want you to do that. If the therapy doesn't help, then they'll discuss medication with you, or they might ask you to do both at the same time, but I've never heard of anyone being put straight onto medication without trying the other methods first.
Just wanted to warn you against benzodiazepines. Terrible, terrible drugs that will appear to help at first but will then start to do harm to your brain and central nervous system. My girlfriend has been prescribed Klonopin since she was 18, and around 24 or 25 she started having bouts of depression that she never had before that were worse than the anxiety she was supposed to be preventing. She thankfully identified the problem and is tapering off them. You can't just quit them or you can have seizures and even DIE, so she's going through a very difficult taper off these things that will take years after all is said and done. 95% of doctors and psychiatrists don't know about this bad reaction and some are to arrogant to listen. Some psychiatrists receive thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars, in bonuses from pharmaceutical companies for prescribing their product. It's just awful. She can't work, she can barely eat without her stomach distending as if she were 9 months pregnant... I wouldn't believe it if I didn't see it. She gets awful sensations as her nervous system heals, she has trouble sleeping. Whatever you do, please do not take benzodiazepines! Just because it comes from a doctor doesn't mean it's good for you!

I've never taken prescription drugs for anxiety but I have a couple of friends who have. I honestly don't recommend taking drugs in order for things like depression or anxiety because they can mess with your mind in other ways. One of my friends has serious problems with forgetfulness because of her anxiety pills. She forgot that she was having her own daughter's 2nd birthday party and that there were people who were supposed to be arriving at her house that evening. Another friend of mine would be super chill and cool then she would just have these extreme depressive states where she would start talking all crazy and suicidal. I had to stop what I was doing three times and drive to her to make sure she didn't do anything nuts.
If you can, I'd recommend going the good ole natural way of healing anxiety with some therapy/counseling to really dissect why you are feeling anxious and some practices you can do to break the mental habit.
Lol they won't just give you meds in one visit if at all. You'll talk to them for a bit (maybe a few sessions) to evaluate you then try to find a nonmedicated solution first then test medication and this all takes time.
I didn't realize that. I really thought it would have been a quick talk and a prescription lol.
Definitely go see your doc. Talk to him/her about this. They're the ones who get paid good $ for that advice.
I just drink🙈🍇...
