If we don't have anything noticably in common, how do I talk to him?

So I just moved into a new neighborhood and there's this 19 year old guy who's all about sports and video games, but I don't know much else about him. I'm 16 and for some reason I don't know am kinda attracted to him- but we only talk when there are tons of people around, when it's just us- what do I do? He doesn't start up conversation and I feel awkward. I've been trying to play some of their street basketball games and such but I'm not good at them since I don't know rules and techniques and stuff. He doesn't go to any school and I'm not into sports or video games (I'm more of the artsy type). And to top it all off- I think he called me kid once...? Was that an "I'm obviously not interested" or just a slip up because there are tons of actual kids in our neighborhood that he calls kid all the time. . . Please help me!

Well first you can start by asking how his day...what is he up too. Try to get in video games if you don't like sport. Ask him to watch movies with you. When a guy calls you a kid he is mostly seeing as kid most of the times tho. But sometimes there just doing that to call you names and flirt with you. It is rude when they call you a kid.
