What do you think when you see a guy who doesn't fit a specific genre?

think about "hipster" or "indie kids". in the last few years (especially around the time MySpace started) the "indie" scene became very popular and everyone can recognize them.

but how do you think you would you feel if you saw one of them years ago when they weren't common as they are now? would the apparent uniqueness or "unlabeled" quality intrigue/attract you? or would you just think they were weird or not care?

i only chose indie kids as an example because this is what used to truly be rare/unique, so remember this isn't a question about indie kids but about peculiarity in a stranger

I like when people don't shoot for a particular image, and don't care how others might interpret their looks. If you wear what you like and have an interest in what you like, because you like it, and not for the appearance value it gives off, then kudos. There's usually a noticeable difference between people who dress and live for themselves, and those who dress and live to appeal to the perceptions of others.

As far as 'peculiarity in a stranger' goes, the more genuinely unusual someone seems, the more it catches my attention, and the more curious I get. I tend to be drawn to strangeness, rather than repelled by it. I like things/people that are non-traditional, even controversial, that break rules if those rules get in the way of dancing to the beat of their own drum. Not weirdness for the sake of being weird, but weirdness just because that's what appeals, regardless of the views of others.

Haha I remember in 8th grade I went to the city and saw some indie/hipster kids for the first time in Soho and the East Village. I had never really seen anyone like that before, and I thought it was cool. That was before I discovered how obnoxious hipsters can really be, but not gonna lie, my 8th grade self was really impressed by them. This was before "indie" was as popular as it is today, and I had never seen anyone who dressed the way they did, especially not in my town.

Yea. I think that if clothes look flattering, and not overly slutty (for girls), then who cares? The things that would make me not want to hang out with a certain group would be :

- Smoking. Ew.

- Lack of hygiene.

- Being bitches, unless they have good reason to be towards some people and I usually know about reasons they would, because being "that shoulder to cry on" means you learn things about people.

- Not respecting me or my friends.

Not in that order, but, you know.

That made me sound really vain, what I mean is if I'm judging someone solely on their appearance, if their clothes are flattering, it doesn't really matter what they are wearing exactly.

I really don't care about labels. Everyone has different interests so not any one person can be put under one neat and tidy category. Everyone has a little bit of hipster, prep, what have you in them. It's what makes us all unique.
