Typically people say you get your period about one week out of every month. I think for most women it lasts a couple days under a week, but still every month unless you're extremely stressed, malnourished, or obese.
Personal hygiene is extremely important but you can get by just by thinking about it. Breathable underwear (cotton) is possibly the only tip that not every single person in the world will tell you. Also don't take douching advice from health blogs, these are all horrible ideas. No food should ever go there.

Also in order for a female to start menstruation she needs a certain amount of body fat. This is why the super fit triathletes will not have a period because they have a low percentage of body fat. Body fat contains estrogen and estrogen triggers your period.
