Ex was in daily contact before his cancer surgery but I heard nothing after?

I'm still in contact with my ex. Over the past few months he was diagnosed with early stage cancer, and was scheduled for surgery Monday this week. Over the preceding weekend we had a lot of contact, mostly just joking, no talk about the upcoming surgery. We usually have contact once per week or every second week, but last week I think 6 times. For all I know he went for surgery Monday, came out of hospital Tuesday. I haven't heard from him since the day before surgery. He was online Wednesday, and I believe he was talking to family members, so at least he's alive. He didn't care to contact me even though I'm sure he understands I'm wondering.

The cancer was small and early stage, but he's been very concerned, which is understandable. I'm just wondering why he wanted to talk a lot before but nothing after surgery? I still love him, which he knows. We're both single.
