People is general are STUPID , they show this with food choices which is a good analogy , in the end they have to be saved from themselves via regulation , because they will not make good choices , they just won't ! They will think that some kind of fast food is okey , its never okey , not ever ! Same with processed sugar , and processed ( we can't call it food , its not ) --
All exactly the same issues apply to social media , what was meant to be " a bit of fun " became all that it should not. Its all true , people will kill themselves via aspiration , look at how they just simply " accepted " ALL the untruths pushed on them with Covid , weak , mindless , stupid - followers.
All is completely correct.
I will offer a possibly opposite view of @molonski2 (with respect).
People need to be able to make better choices. That's the most practical way.
For example, if you find a bully victim of a child, you can choose to either teach him to stand up for himself and learn how to defend himself or you can go on anti-bullying campaigns and try to fix the entire world.
The problem with the latter approach is that it can't possibly work perfectly. Might be worth trying but if we do so at the neglect of the former approach, that child is going to grow up to an adult so vulnerable and weak who can only do okay in society if there isn't a single bully around.
That would be great if they would - No doubt , vote with your feet. But , they won't , and thats where free markets just dont work , I agree with you , but it just will not happen , we see it every day.
There's like a conflict between a psychological (individual) approach vs. sociology (group) approach. And the problem I find with the sociological approach is that it rarely ever works. Even if you tax junk food to try to combat obesity with a shotgun-style, wide-hitting approach, lots of people struggling with obesity might then start eating entire bags of almonds (1000+ kcal) in one sitting. Then what? Ban almonds? They're very healthy for those who can moderate themselves to a handful or two at most a day.
@molonski2 Cheers! I agree free markets don't work but I think values can. For example, here in Japan, we have the McDonald's and so many sweets and snacks, maybe even more than US (even ice cream out of common vending machines) without government intervention. They're extremely cheap (actually the cheapest calorie-dense source in general).
But we don't have nearly as much of a problem with obesity, and I think that's because of culture. For example, Japanese parents will feed their kids less if they are starting to get chubby. Just like they will change their ways if the kid if doing poorly in school and getting bad grades. They make the correction. I see so many American parents who don't seek corrective action; they keep feeding their kids until they're morbidly obese at 16 years old.

Japanese values are entirely different agreed , my comments are more aimed at the West , attitudes in Japan are just more realistic
