Baking soda diet!

I'm kind of worried about my friend... She has put on some weight and for some time now she uses baking soda on whatever she cooks. From what she tells me, due to the baking soda she eats smaller portions and is satisfied quickly. The result is that she doesn't have cravings between the meals and indeed she is losing weight! I'm happy for her but is there any possibility that the baking soda is harmful to her body! Just in case, if someone knows anything please answer.
