It's basically a contract to ensure the married people (usually the man) won't lose a lot of their wealth or assets if a divorce happens and ensures the other person (usually the woman) won't take a large percentage of the partner's wealth if a divorce happens. So it's like Divorce Insurance.

Thank you for all the responses. Now, here's my answer: If a woman I was with wouldn't sign a prenup, I wouldn't continue being with her, because it means she's just a gold digger who thinks she's entitled to something she didn't earn. And if I was with a woman who earned much more than me, I'd still sign one, cause she's entitled to what she's earned, as well.

I don’t plan on ever getting married. If I were stupid enough to get married, I would probably strongly consider getting a prenup because of the way modern women my age are. Yet I know they would just take that as though I don’t trust them which is true. I don’t. So that is why I never plan to get married. Besides, you gotta be friends with a potential partner before starting a romantic relationship before deciding on marriage. And if you have no female friends on purpose, (and you aren’t into men,) than you’ll never get married anyway and won’t have to worry about considering getting a prenup
I would be the one asking for one. I have my own business, and I don't intend for someone who doesn't love me anymore or who cheated on me or whatever horrible thing that could possibly end a marriage, to think he has dibs on something he had nothing to do with.
I forgot to answer the “Why?” : Because he deserves the money he has made, he deserves his portions of the assets. There’s not much else to it. Realistically speaking for my situation. I sure as hell would not be making as much as my boyfriend. Therefore, he deserves to keep what is his due to his hard work. I don’t want his money. I don’t want want he worked his ass off for. That is not fair.

I get it, but I don’t think I could live by that. I couldn’t marry someone who I wouldn’t share everything with. What sort of income would he have to feel the means necessary? This conversation should occur before popping the question. Each party should consider their losses, and if that person is worth it, and deserving in every way, I don’t believe there should be any reservations. If he was very wealthy, and expected me not to hold a reliable income myself, I couldn’t trust that I wouldn’t be screwed over by the set up he’s suggesting. If it was a one time allowance, I’d be upset that he wouldn’t share. This would be an easy no for me.
Yeah, if he doesn't expect you to have a reliable or good income while with him, there should be no prenup. Yet, if he is wealthy before meeting you and doesn't expect you to not keep your means of income, then a prenup is to protect his extensive assets from being halved by someone who really doesn't need to use them because she makes enough to live healthily on her own income.
And I totally get that. Nobody gets married expecting a divorce. And if I had millions, or hundred of thousands, I’d be a little more reserved too. I’ve never been in that position so it’s hard to truly know, but I’m certain that I’d choose to just simply never marry if I felt as though a prenup would be necessary. I’m a little superstitious, and if something like that was put in place so early on, I’d always feel like the relationship was just a ticking time bomb, and everything belonged to the one with more money (whether that be me, or him) I wouldn’t be comfortable with that as I prefer to keep things 50/50.
Didn't see your question till late. One of the reasons I married my wife is because she offered to sign a prenup without me even asking. There were a lot of other reasons but this was a must have for me. She was fully aware of all of my views on how men often get abused by modern women & the simp controlled court system. No I wouldn't get married without one. The prenup we have is fair & balanced. Also I wasn't looking to screw her out of anything reasonable.
I would absolutely insist on one now!! Especially after my last/first marriage. She didn’t contribute a dime towards the mortgage, worked a home daycare making as much as I did, paid minimal bills …. And walked away with half the house and half my pension!!
I'm not sure. Here in Japan, we don't have the concept of alimony so prenups are unnecessary. It might be a big part of the reason we still value marriage quite a lot here since we don't have to hear stories of people losing half of what they own as a result of divorce causing more and more people to lose faith in marriage and more people to divorce.
I prefer it this way in a system where prenups aren't necessary in the first place.
I think if I was contemplating marriage in a country where alimony was a thing like the US, then I'd at least take my sweetest time before getting married (say live together peacefully for 10 years first) regardless of whether or not I contemplate the idea of a prenup.
... or maybe just not get married in a place like the US. There's a much heavier legal factor looming over marriage and less of a communal factor there to my understanding. I also think the US is where I can try new things, like a life with a woman even if we have kids and be like some new type of couple raising kids together even though we aren't married and leave the state out of it. Here that would be all but socially unacceptable for couples to be raising kids outside of marriage, and generally very bad for the kids.
I think prenups are basically saying that you think the union will fail. If there is a large difference in assets then they can be a good idea, but if the net worth of the parties are similar then I think it's unnecessary.
Prenups are thrown out of court everyday for one reason or another. I advice men not to get married except for if they want to start and raise their own family. Biological children are about the only thing which is worth the risk. There are other legal ways to save your assets in case of a divorce. But for that you have to consult a lawyer experienced in that field. Trust me, $2000 in lawyer consultation fees can save you millions later.

No. Because a prenup just takes into consideration materialistic side of life. It doesn’t take into consideration the things someone contributes and earns outside of that. Such as nursing someone who is sick for many years with cancer. Or giving up a career to take care of children. prenups are very black and white thinking I believe. Personally I probably wouldn’t even date someone with this mindset to begin with. It’s a certain type of personality that would ask for a prenup.

Nope, I'd never be ok with that. Either we're all in or not at all, otherwise we're setting up our marriage for a failure and that's just not good enough for me. I'm a Christian though and would only marry another Christian so I believe we'd agree that marriage is forever.
The only case in which prenup is acceptable to me is if one person has a risky job that if something goes badly could result in paying out a large compensation.

Yes. If we get married my things are his things and his things are mine. With our career path I'll end up earning more money than him, but that is irrelevant because it is our money not my money if we're married. Getting a divorce is not an option in my head. But if the unthinkable happens I think that it should be hard. It should be difficult to get through. Dividing the assets should not be easy.
I'm on the fence about this. In the past I would have said "No". But now I have significant assets. And well, the market of women out there is what it is. So while I'd consider a prenuptial. I've been told they have to be pretty airtight for her not to take a sledge hammer to your wealth should she decide to divorce you.

Interesting assumption that prenups are there to protect the man's assets from the woman. How bout women with assets to protect? Personally i'd happily sign one, work out financials and custody of kids before things get nasty following break up.

You can write the prenup so it only kicks in if the wealth is over a certain amount. Although, I'd say if you're married and one of you buys a lottery ticket it should be shared by both. Things change when you get married & something like that isn't like you put in 60 hours/week on a job for 3-5 years to get it. It's more in the category of picking an apple off a tree.
@hahahmm I'm happy to share most things with her, but with that amount of money (hundreds of millions) I would prefer that it's used in the specific ways I have considered. I don't think I'll win, there's a higher chance of me getting struck by lightning twice every day for a year, but someone has to win.
if you marry the right woman AND you're the right man then she will perceive you as the leader and happily go along with you doing whatever you want with say 90% of that money. Pick the wrong woman and she will just poison your dinner and get 100% of the money after your funeral. Prenup doesn't really solve the right/wrong woman problem. But it can help weed out the wrong women too, I think.
Any woman I marry will be quality enough to not take what she knows isn’t hers. She also will know that if anything happened, I would make sure she was taken care of.

In regards to the update, thats my reasoning as well. Prenup would be so precise that loopholes would be impossible, so no matter who made more, me and her both keep our own stuff and wealth, should divorce happen.
And this is coming from someone so picky when choosing a wife, that divorce has almost zero chance of happening. But you gotta prepare for even the most unlikely shit.
