Guys, what does it mean when a guy acknowledges you when he is with a group of his friends?

A friend of mine and I were out at lunch at a café near my campus yesterday talking about a new art gallery opening up a couple blocks away. As we left the quaint, little eatery I noticed a group of guys who looked slightly familiar walking in our direction. When they were close enough to us that we could make out some of their features, I began to recognize some of their faces--one of them being my crush. And once they were a couple feet away my crush, who was originally joking around with his friends, looked at me, said "Hi Emily," then proceeded walking. A few short moments later, one of the other guys in the group turned around and said hello as well.

Now, I have a tendency to over-think certain situations so, guys, could you help me out here? Why would a guy do this?
