My friend told his girlfriends ex that he is with his ex. He did it bc My friends girlfriends ex wouldn’t back off. Did my friend do the right thing?

Ok so for the sake of clarification. My friends name is A and A is dating Z. Z’s ex is D.
A told D that A is dating Z now and A did it because D just wouldn’t let go of his feelings for Z. D was controlling to Z when they were together and took advantage of her kindness and generosity. A could see how D was controlling to Z and is a good judge of character. A did what he had to do in order to ensure that D who is toxic (I agree with what A said) to back off and move on with his life. What do you think? I think A did the right thing but what do you think?
D wasn’t going to stop pursuing Z and Z has issues with asserting herself and is a bit of a people pleaser and D was taking advantage of that
