Should I have to knock before entering a room in my own home?

So I moved in with my boyfriend a few months ago and it's going pretty well except he gets really annoyed if I don't knock before entering his office, and we had a big fight about it.

He said that it's common courtesy to knock before entering a room with a closed door and I told him in my own home I should be free to go where I want and what is he hiding anyway? We ended up arguing over this with neither of us conceding and then he pulled the "at the end of the day I own the house, and it's a rule, I do the same for you" except I don't care if he knocks or not.

you spend time at his parents house, his dad walks into your bedroom without knocking and you are changing, not a problem because it’s his house.

Or you are in the bathroom and his dad or brother etc just walk in to the bathroom while you are in the bath, not a problem…

yeah... it would be better to knock in my opinion. even if you don't have a problem with people not knocking, personally when people dont knock it bothers me so i can kind of understand his point of view. if you want him to respect you, then yeah, you should definitely knock since it would be respecting his privacy if you knock first.

I see both sides, maybe he's doing porn and is afraid you'll catch him so he is hiding it but it can also be respectful.

This is why I will never live with a guy before I am married to him, I do not want to be stuck in the "its my house" rule. That seems like an ultimatum to move out to me. If I am a perpetual guest.

You should always knock when the door is closed, and then wait for the person to tell you it's okay to enter the room. Otherwise, you are invading their privacy, which is wrong.

If the door is open, you don't have to knock, but it's still appreciated, before entering.

He's absolutely right. You should always knock. It's just common courtesy as he said. And just because you don't care if he knocks or not you should still respect his wishes. Not everyone is like you. And wanting someone to knock doesn't mean you have something to hide that's just stupid. Also it's still HIS house, not yours. I don't know why you're calling it your own home when it's not. You just live there. Even it was your home, he's a grown man, you should knock before entering any room he's in. I can't stand people who don't knock..

If he's setting this rule about 1 room, his office. I don't think it's too much to give him that one room as his sanctuary if you will. He's not saying you can't go in or anything. He's just asking that you respect this one boundary. Sorry I have to agree with him here.

I'm torn by this, had to think about it for a moment. You shouldn't have to, but everyone's privacy is important so courtesy is that you do, however, he sounds like he's got something to hide, so there's a bigger issue. Yes, knock, but also find out wtf he's hiding from you.

his office means work generally, so its only polite to knock and takes nothing away from you to do, save being polite and showing respect to your partner.. so your choice

Even though you moved in, it's technically his home/place still. But that aside, people also have a right to basic privacy in general, and that shows that. Some people don't care about that as much, but some do. Just an example, when I was younger I lived with my parents, there was no lock on my bedroom door and my dad just walked right in one day, no knock or anything and I was changing and standing there completely naked. It's just common respect/decency for people's privacy.

Maybe he likes privacy a bit more or grew up in a home where knocking door is very important as privacy. It is his home too. It's better to knock. It's better to give him the privacy he wants. Arguments shouldn't be made in such small things.

Yes if you share a house with anyone you must respect their privacy in their specific zones of the home. That includes your boyfriends any kids and so on.

He's absolutely right. Upon approaching a "closed door", you should, in all due respect for who or whatever is on the other side hoping to get and frankly expecting to get some privacy, knock on the door and await acknowledgement
