Do you believe in unconditional love?

let’s have this discussion.

im sure we all have people that have been in our life’s thick and thin we would always talk to them again after any argument or disagreement or fight no matter how bad it got, either we would start speaking again soon or a long time later, either way the bond found it’s way back. It can be family, friends or a partner. I always thought that’s what unconditional love is.. till I recently realised that all love is conditional and transactional. MOST healthy, people would stop loving someone after the person crossed certain boundaries, or would at least stop having the person in their life and showing them love.

I’d say yes and no.


Yes, in the sense that someone can make that sort of commitment to someone and risk everything for them and go through anything and everything for them.


Like a friend jumping in front of a school shooter to shield the friend behind them—literally giving their life to save their friend. And, it’s possible for a man to do that for the women he loves like a truly close husband and wife. Or, a soldier jumping on a grenade to protect their teammates.


So, I believe it’s possible. To love someone with your all with no guarantees of receiving anything back. Pure altruistic love.


But, I also believe it’s incredibly rare and it’s truly a treasure if it’s ever received.


In the sense of no, it’s not possible for love to be unconditional if we are going with the definition of there can’t be a “because” at all. Like, if someone promised to love someone else no matter what, the reason they follow through until the very end may be because they never ever break a promise, no matter how f*cked up things become because that’s just a personal code they do not break and will die by that code. As long as they don’t break that code, the other person will continue to be loved. This wouldn’t be an “as long as you” but it’s an “as long as I” since this would be independent of who the person loves. But, it’s still a condition. Thus, not truly unconditional. And, the person is getting something they want out of it—they want to live and die by their code.


In conclusion, yes, unconditional love is real but incredibly rare. And, no, unconditional love is not possible because someone can always come up with a reason or condition if they get technical enough.

I noticed you said MOST people. I agree. For someone to commit to true unconditional love, things can really go sideways.

For example, true unconditional love within a dysfunctional or toxic or abusive relationship would be seen as crazy and/or obsessive. True unconditional love would be willing to go there—to be called insane—to be called mentally ill. Any sane person would leave a relationship like that.

Unconditional love is crazy (or can be). There may not be logic or reason or rhyme. Someone can commit themselves to someone for better or worse and truly mean it. But, the number of people who truly mean it are definitely not MOST people. More like, incredibly rare outliers.

Of course since that's what love is. It's not love if it's all conditional, if you want to say stuff like I'll only be with you if you do this etc then they make that deal that's not really any different to paying someone to be with you. Because you both have to agree to some conditions that are alike to a contract.

Now if your asking well without conditions wouldn't the other person just do what they want and cheat and stuff? Nope not if they loved you. If they loved you in the first place they wouldn't want you to be unhappy therefore wouldn't. And if you loved them back there shouldn't be such a thing as cheating because both of you know that would hurt each other.
Now if your both happy with an open relation that's also still love because again you are not hurting the other person. If you've talked to them and know what hurts them you are obviously not gonna do it same way they wouldn't to you. So in reality there is no condition, there is just simply things you wouldn't do to a person you love and that's do something that hurts them on purpose.

About the only unconditional love is parents for children and even that can wane if a child, say an adult one, keeps screwing up so many times they end up addicted or in jail and don't get well one way or the other.

So, just about all love has conditions. Some, such as parents for children, is the most lenient. Couples, people who are strangers when they meet, likely have more conditions. Someone who's been burned in a former relationship probably has the most conditions of all.

Unconditional love in my mind it exist only between a mother and a child a father and a child.


In a relationship? I don’t see it exist at some point they might think meh this is it.. if they don’t take action to leave that’s because they are lazy and used to those daily habits he / she has

Yes I absolutely do. I mean sure if someone did something absolutely horrible it could break that.

There is unconditional love when you’re with the right people. When you can really just be yourself and not worry about judgment or having to change who you are for someone.

A lot of people use people especially people who are good people. Sometimes people who were the best most nice people end up bitter because of how some people treated them.

It’s good to have boundaries and someone who loves and respects you will honor them the same as I try to respect theirs.

I think unconditional love does exist but for women only (and children of course) but not for men. This is because as a women people will automatically like you just because of who you are and for simply existing vs a man everyone will always be skeptical about you and you need to prove to them you are worth it and that usually comes in doing something for them and they might like you for some time but the moment that you stop providing what that is they will start to look somewhere else.

Men love idealistically, they can love unconditionally.
Women love practically, meaning so long as they are useful they will love him. Women will only love unconditionally their children or animals.
Sure you can say everyone has a limit, but that limit is defined idealistically for men and practically for women. Only women, children and animals can be loved unconditionally, men are loved under the condition that they provide something.

I think most people confuse unconditional love with unconditional acceptance. I do believe in unconditional love but not unconditional acceptance. If someone crosses the line, you shouldn't have to accept it. You can cut ties with them, without stopping loving them and wishing them well. We can keep loving someone unconditionally, but from afar.

Yeah. Unconditional love doesn't seem to be a thing, couples can drive eachother to insanity and mothers can stop loving their kids. Everyone has their limits, it's just some people sent those limits lower than others.

I would say the closest thing to unconditional love is maybe the love animals have for their owners, maybe some parents love their children unconditionally but part of that is selfish because that child is part of them especially if it’s a mother. But I believe friendship and relationship wise it’s never unconditional unless the person has extreme attachment issues

I have never believed in unconditional love. Love is based on trust, trust can be broken therefore love can be broken. The only people who scream about unconditional love are those who did you wrong and then you turned your back on them afterwards. All love is conditional... even love for a child or mother.

It's always a transaction but often are those transaction ridiculously unbalanced when you look at such relationship from third person perspective. If someone gets practically nothing for a lot, you could call it unconditional.

The only unconditional love if there is such a thing, is parents to their children and God to all of us... Although the former is not always guaranteed.

If my partner killed someone or cheated on me then I wouldn't love them anymore
For family, I honestly can't say that I wouldn't love my parents at all if they killed someone. Unless that someone was a person I was close too

I think it's definitely possible with children. For partners though there's definitely always some expectation or condition.

That is something only parents can do in my opinion. About love regarding romantic relationships, cheat on me or lie to me about something and it ends then and there.
