Boyfriend has been ignoring me for days for a reason unrelated to me?

For several days, my boyfriend has been ignoring me. I have had no idea why. I sent him a final text today saying this was the last time I’ll message him and that I don’t know why he couldn’t just tell me what was happening. He told me his parents couldn’t visit when they’d planned as his grandmother is very ill and his application for a job got rejected. So he’s been really stressed out and couldn’t deal with speaking to me. I feel bad for him but he could have just let me know instead of completely ignoring me. Is this normal to do in relationships?

This happened to my ex. She left message after message for her boyfriend, getting angrier and angrier and finally shouting at him over voice mail that he was a piece of shit and they were over, and then a couple days later she found out he'd been hit by a car and she'd been screaming at a dead man the entire time.
