What relationship cliché do you think is true?

The one I strongly believe in is  “You cannot change people unless they are willing to change themselves”  I have seen many questions on GaG where the Asker seems to be so keen on changing their partner or a friend or a family member. Personally, I think it would do more harm than good to the relationship and romantically speaking, if you cannot accept someone as they are, why be in a relationship with them? I don’t think anybody should be seen as a broken doll that needs fixing.  Another good one is  “Love yourself before you love someone else”  This could not be any truer! If one is not in the right emotional or mental state to date, they probably should refrain from dating. If someone has a lot of internal hate, they could project it on their partner and the relationship could turn toxic easily.

Both are true. The one that I think is more true is "You cannot change people unless they are willing to change themselves”. Changing someone and who they are is not possible. It isn't fair either. You knew exactly what you had in the beginning of a relationship.

If you saw some character fault that you could just not live with, you shouldn't have continued the relationship. This isn't to say that we all don't have our faults to work on. This is something that the individual needs to do.

That person needs to work on themselves and be better in whatever way THEY think they need to be. The problem is when they don't see it or don't want to hear it. There are some things that you can overlook. Others, not so much.

I will take one example that should be easy for most to understand. Alcoholism. Maybe your partner didn't drink and picked up this habit because of stress or whatever reason. They start drinking too much and fall deeper into a hole.

You know they need to change. The problem is, when substance abuse is part of the issue, often they don't realize it or don't want to hear it because that is how they cope with things.

Only when they hit bottom and realize THEY need to change will it happen. Luckily, I have not ever been in a situation like that but have seen it happen.

I love to cook, and so often, some of my first dates have been me cooking (by choice). I have never ever ever met a single man who hated the fact that I did this. Men (and women too clearly) love to be taken care of, and food is one of those things that nurtures the body and the soul, so knowing he knows you can provide a bit of that nurture tends to endure you to them.

2. It isn’t you, it’s me.

People give this one a bad wrap like oh, people just say that, but you also know who you are, and if you're adult enough to admit that you have issues and things you need to deal with, this is the clearest way to let the other person know, that hey, there is nothing you could have done to fix this relationship because you have to work on yourself first, right, before you can be in a healthy relationship again.

3. There is no "I" in team.

If you and your partner are truly a team, then your relationship isn't all about you or him all the time. They have needs, they have things that are important to them outside of you, they don't always agree with you, they have goals. If you continuously ignore that and put focus on just you, most likely your relationship will fail.

Both of your examples are perfect, they are 100% true. And I hate that a woman will change for a man, no one should ever do that. Be yourself, that's where you are the happiest. Having to act a different way for somebody else's enjoyment is ridiculous

not sure if this is considered a relationship cliche but, expecting something you’re not reciprocating from a partner is one that popped up in my head. I think that, as much as you can do things for someone you love, a relationship is all about give and take… but not everyone realises that unfortunately, and they take their significant other for granted.

"You lose them the way you got them" for the people get into relationships with someone already in a relationship. That person they "stole" ends up cheating on them later on.
